How to build U.S. credit with an ITIN

By Fico Rebuild editorial team · Published · Updated

You can build U.S. credit without a Social Security number. With an ITIN, you can apply for a secured card or credit-builder loan at a bank or credit union that accepts ITIN applications. Paying on time and keeping balances low builds a file at the credit bureaus over time.

Key points
  • Start with a bank or credit union that accepts ITIN applications.
  • Secured cards and credit-builder loans are the usual first accounts.
  • When you receive an SSN, ask each creditor to update your number, then check all three reports.

Can an ITIN be used to build credit?

An Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN) is issued by the IRS to people who must file U.S. taxes but are not eligible for an SSN. No federal law prevents lenders from accepting an ITIN, but each lender sets its own policy, so ask before you apply. The credit bureaus can build and match a file using your name, address, date of birth and ITIN.

Ways to get started

  • Secured credit card: a deposit becomes your credit limit. Some issuers move you to a regular card after a period of on-time payments.
  • Credit-builder loan: common at credit unions. The loan is held in an account while you make monthly payments, and released when it is paid off.
  • Authorized user: being added to a family member’s card can help if their history is good and the issuer reports authorized users to the bureaus.
  • Rent and utility reporting: some services report on-time rent to the bureaus. Check the cost and which bureaus receive the data first.

Using your first card well

  • Pay on time every month, ideally in full.
  • Keep the statement balance low, well under 30% of the limit.
  • Avoid applying for several cards in a short period.
  • Check your reports every few months.

When you receive an SSN

Contact every bank and card issuer where you have an account and ask them to update your ITIN to your SSN. Then check your Equifax, Experian and TransUnion reports to confirm your accounts appear in one file. If you see a second file or missing accounts, ask the bureau to merge or correct them.

Frequently asked questions

Can I get my credit report with an ITIN?

Yes. If an online request cannot verify your identity, the bureaus generally accept requests by mail with copies of identity and address documents.

Will my ITIN credit history disappear when I get an SSN?

Not automatically, but you should ask your creditors to update the number and then check your reports to confirm everything was combined.
